Selecting the best firewood can seem daunting. Follow these tips to ensure you get the most out of your purchase:

Opt for Seasoned Wood: Always choose wood that has been dried for at least six months. Seasoned wood burns cleaner, hotter, and more efficiently.

Consider Wood Type: Hardwoods like oak and maple burn longer and hotter, making them ideal for cold winters. Softwoods like pine are great for kindling but burn faster.

Check Moisture Levels: Use a moisture meter to ensure levels are below 20%. Wet wood produces more smoke and contributes to creosote buildup in chimneys.

Buy Locally: Supporting local suppliers like Timber Ridge reduces transportation emissions and supports the community.

By selecting the right firewood, you not only ensure a warm home but also minimize environmental impact. When selecting sustainable firewood choices, ensure they meet your heating requirements and align with eco-friendly standards.

Efficient Stoves: Use EPA-certified wood stoves for cleaner burns. Modern stoves are designed to maximize heat output while minimizing emissions.

Regular Maintenance: Clean chimneys and stoves regularly to prevent creosote buildup, which can cause chimney fires and decrease efficiency.

Recycle Ash: Use wood ash as a natural fertilizer in your garden. It’s rich in potassium and calcium carbonate, beneficial for soil health.

The warm glow of the fire sets the perfect backdrop for sharing spooky tales, funny anecdotes, or cherished family memories. This activity requires nothing more than an active imagination and a willingness to engage.

To keep the energy high, try introducing themes or games into your storytelling sessions. For example, each participant can build on a single story, adding new twists and turns. This collaborative storytelling not only engages everyone but also sparks plenty of laughter.

Additionally, consider having a storytelling competition where participants act out their tales with dramatic flair. The winner could receive a fun prize like a marshmallow roasting kit or a firewood bundle!

When winter rolls around, there’s nothing quite like the warmth of a roaring fire to keep you cozy. However, building the perfect winter fire is both an art and a science. With the right firewood, safety measures, and layering techniques, you can create a blaze that burns longer, stays safer, and provides consistent heat.

Knowing how to build the perfect winter fire is essential for those looking to stay warm during cold evenings while enjoying a relaxing atmosphere. In this guide, we’ll explore expert tips and techniques that will help you create a fire that’s not just long-lasting but also safe and efficient.

The foundation of the perfect winter fire begins with selecting the best firewood. Hardwoods like oak, maple, and hickory are ideal as they burn hotter and last longer than softwoods such as pine or spruce.

Properly seasoned firewood is key. Freshly cut wood contains high moisture levels, which make it harder to burn and can produce excess smoke. Instead, use wood that’s been seasoned for at least six months and has a moisture content of less than 20%.

Storage tips for firewood:

Store logs in a well-ventilated, dry space to prevent rot.

Elevate firewood off the ground to reduce moisture absorption.

Cover your woodpile with a tarp but leave the sides open for airflow.

A smoldering fire not only provides less heat but can also contribute to creosote buildup in your chimney.

Instead, maintain a balance by using only a few logs at a time. This approach ensures your fire burns hotter and cleaner. Remember, knowing how to build the perfect winter fire includes managing airflow effectively.

Layering is one of the most effective techniques for creating a long-lasting blaze. Follow these steps to master the layered fire-building method:

Place large logs at the bottom of your firebox or fireplace.

Add medium-sized logs on top.

Use kindling, such as small twigs or wood chips, as the topmost layer.

This structure ensures proper airflow and steady burning. The teepee method, where logs are arranged in a cone shape, is also a popular choice for efficient burning. More importantly, they can contribute to creosote buildup in your chimney, which increases the risk of chimney fires.

Instead, invest in natural fire starters made from wood shavings, sawdust, or wax. These provide a safer and more effective way to start the perfect winter fire.

As winter approaches, ensuring a reliable and safe heating source becomes paramount, especially for those utilizing firewood to warm their homes. Whether you’re a seasoned wood burner or new to the practice, adhering to Winter Firewood Tips is essential for a warm and secure season. Proper firewood management not only keeps your home cozy but also prevents accidents and enhances heating efficiency.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore seven crucial dos and don’ts for handling and storing firewood this winter, ensuring your home stays warm and safe.

Proper storage is the cornerstone of Winter Firewood Tips. Firewood should be elevated off the ground to prevent moisture absorption, which can lead to mold and decay. Using a firewood rack or platform allows air circulation, aiding in the drying process and ensuring efficient burning.

Additionally, firewood should be stored at least 30 feet away from your home to deter pests and reduce fire hazards. Cover your woodpile with a breathable tarp to protect it from snow and rain while still allowing airflow.

If you live in a particularly damp climate, consider investing in a firewood storage shed to shield your logs from excessive moisture. A well-ventilated structure can make all the difference in preserving the quality of your firewood.

A critical point in Winter Firewood Tips is to avoid burning wet or unseasoned wood. Wet wood produces excessive smoke, releases harmful chemicals, and clogs your chimney with creosote buildup. It also burns less efficiently, generating minimal heat.

Seasoning wood involves drying it for at least six months to reduce its moisture content. Hardwoods like oak and maple can take up to a year to season properly. Always purchase firewood from reputable suppliers who guarantee seasoned wood. If you’re uncertain, test the wood’s moisture content using a moisture meter. Logs with a moisture content below 20% are considered ideal for burning.

Store firewood in a well-ventilated area, such as a shed with good airflow, or in a sheltered spot outdoors. A covered woodpile allows the firewood to breathe while protecting it from rain and snow.

Avoid placing your firewood under gutters or in areas prone to water pooling, as moisture can hinder the seasoning process and promote mold growth. If space permits, arrange your woodpile in a crisscross pattern to further enhance ventilation.

To ensure longevity, periodically inspect the base of your woodpile for signs of rot. Keeping your firewood off damp surfaces can significantly extend its usability.

Extra Tips for Managing Firewood for Winter Throughout the Season

Once you’ve calculated how much firewood for winter you need, it’s crucial to manage it properly throughout the colder months. One of the best practices is to always have more than you think you’ll need. Weather conditions can change unexpectedly, and it’s better to have a little extra wood stored than to run out during a snowstorm or a particularly cold spell.

Another tip is to keep your firewood for winter stocked and accessible. Avoid letting it get buried in snow or ice, which can make it harder to gather when you need it most. If you find yourself using more wood than expected, try adjusting your usage habits. For example, adding extra insulation to your home or improving the efficiency of your wood stove can help reduce the amount of firewood for winter you burn.

Additionally, consider the benefits of keeping a firewood for winter log. Tracking how much wood you burn each season can give you valuable insights into your usage patterns and help you plan better for future winters. By being proactive about managing your firewood for winter needs, you’ll ensure your home stays warm and efficient all season long.

Birch firewood, such as the Premium Yellow Birch Firewood offered by Timber Ridge Firewood, is ideal for quick and efficient heating on cold nights.

5. Ash
Ash is known for its ability to burn well even when not fully seasoned. It offers steady heat and is easy to split, making it a convenient choice for winter fires. When properly seasoned, ash ranks highly among the best firewood for winter for its consistent performance and availability.

Elevate the Wood: Place the wood on a wooden pallet, cinder blocks, or gravel to keep it off the ground. This prevents moisture from seeping into the logs and encourages airflow.

Stack Neatly: Stack firewood in a single row to allow air circulation. Alternating logs in a crisscross pattern adds stability and ensures even drying.

Split Wood First: Split firewood into smaller pieces before stacking to expose the inner wood and speed up drying. Ensure the split side faces outwards for better airflow.

‘Should I get premium kiln dried wood or stick to cheaper ones this winter?’, this might be one of the questions you have in mind. There are lots of firewood types to choose from, and you can choose which ones fit your budget.

In this article, we will discuss why getting the premium could be a good choice. And if you are ready to buy one, go to us at Timber Ridge Firewood. We have firewood of all types, bulk, in cords, bags, or even semi-truckloads.

What is Premium Firewood?

Before we start buying, we should first understand what makes a certain kiln fired wood a ‘premium’. They come from woods that are uncommon and have more desirable characteristics such as long burning time and high heat output.

For example, apple and cherry wood comes from old, unproductive trees in orchards. You can only get them on a seasonal basis, making them rare and somewhat more expensive.

Sometimes, it is not necessary that premium firewoods cost more. They are treated as such because of their good qualities.

Sometimes, these ‘premium firewood’ goes on sale once in a while if season allows it. Our Over-Sized & Undersized Premium Firewood mixed pile has off-cuts of birch and Tamarack wood.

Should I Stock Kiln Dried vs Seasoned Firewood?

Now the question is whether to choose seasoned vs kiln dried firewood for the winter. Kiln-dried firewood are fuel woods that spend time inside a hot kiln or a large oven, which removes water inside the wood. The oven speeds up the drying process, and it dries wood in four to six days.

On the other hand, Seasoned wood, also called naturally seasoned firewood, is left stacked out in the open to dry. The entire process is dependent on the climate and takes months, sometimes up to six months, for the wood to achieve the desired dryness.

Well, both types are good as they are dry. Both have good heat output and are easy to light. For winter burning, kiln-dried firewood is an excellent choice for winter because of its low moisture content, typically ranging between 10-20%.

The controlled drying process in a kiln ensures that the wood dries uniformly and quickly, making it ready to burn immediately upon delivery. One of the key advantages is its high efficiency: kiln-dried firewood burns hotter and produces more heat, making it ideal for warming homes during the cold season.

This also means you’ll need less wood to achieve the same level of warmth compared to seasoned firewood.

In addition to better heat output, kiln-dried firewood creates less smoke and fewer emissions, reducing creosote buildup in your chimney.

This makes it safer, as creosote buildup can lead to chimney fires. Kiln-dried wood is also free from mold, pests, and insects due to the high temperatures used in the drying process, making it a cleaner option for indoor storage.

Most firewood suppliers offer both types during the winter season. Kiln dried firewood is faster to produce as drying only takes days, while stocks of seasoned firewood are often limited especially when there is demand.

What is the best quality firewood?

That’s not an easy question to answer. In our experience, users want to burn woods indoors that have a high heat output, long burning times, and with less smoke.

If you ask us, the firewood that checks all of these qualities is kiln dried birch firewood, all hands down. It is perfect for burning outdoors and indoors, as it burns roaring hot and emits little smoke, which is ideal for the coldest nights and days. Because it is kiln dried, it lights up easily and does not make deposits inside chimney flues.

What is the hottest burning firewood?

Since you will face frigid nights and chilly days, you want to have firewood that emits high heat.

It’s not all about wood. There are a lot of factors that affect the hotness of a fire. The moisture level of the firewood, updrafts, and ambient humidity all play a role.

Now, if we consider all of these factors the same, some types of wood do burn hotter. Apple wood is the number one when it comes to heat output, giving out flames and hot coals when burned. It also emits a nice aroma, making it ideal for smoking, roasting, and heating wood-fired ovens and pizza stones.

How Timber Ridge Firewood Started

The business was started in 2016 by Steven Boivin, who is the current CEO. The company started as a small business. Steven’s parents were arborists who owned a tree farm service (the Timber Ridge Tree Service). It all started as a way to re-purpose tree logs done for forest health management in Calgary and nearby areas.

Steven Boivin, the CEO of Timber Ridge Firewood

Firewood is the best alternative for reusing not-so-good tree logs, as nothing goes to waste. Steven loved nature and working with wood, and also found the important role of a fireplace as a spot for people to interact socially.

Fast forward, the Timber Ridge Firewood remains a family-owned business and expanded to delivering firewood to commercial businesses. We are now the primary supplier of firewood bags to 7-Elevens across Canada.

Aside from firewood, we also want customers to have an elevated experience with it. That’s why aside from providing firewood in Calgary, we also have fire starters, firewood holders, firewood storage racks, and firewood sheds.

Click to buy Naturally Seasoned BC Yellow Birch Firewood.

A gold-standard firewood in heat output and it burns long, yellow birch firewood is desired because it is highly dense and does not do undesirable popping when burned. It emits low-density smoke that does not irritate the eyes, making it fit for burning indoors and outdoors.

Yellow birch wood is very low in resin and sap, so it burns cleanly with little ash and creosote buildup. When ignited, it releases a sweet aroma that improves the fireplace experience. Our Yellow Birch firewood comes from British Columbia, and we deliver kiln-dried and naturally-seasoned firewood. Perfect for fire pits, wood stoves, fireplaces, smokers, and pizza ovens.

Click to buy Premium Alberta Tamarack.

Harvested in Alberta, Tamarack wood is desired because it has a high heat output and a long burn time. In fact, it has a longer burning time than most types of firewood. It also produces low levels of smoke, which is good when burning indoors.

So it burns hot and slow, so expect a longer fire. May burn with a bit of crackle and pop, but that adds to the wonderful fire experience. Perfect for fireplaces and fire pits.

Equally good for burning indoor and outdoor, we have a mix of dried Larch/Douglas fir firewood. These softwoods burn hot, so you may only need to reduce the quantity of wood to generate the same heat output.

It also burns longer, so that’s more savings and less reloads. The firewood may burn with a bit of crackle and generate low levels of smoke. You will love this for indoor heating and for outdoor fire pits.

It is also somewhat easy to light. Cedar firewood is perfect for camping, hosting a backyard gathering, burning indoors, or enjoying a cozy fire.

It burns slowly and emits a nice aroma, so cherry firewood is good for firepits, outdoor fires, and for heating during the coldest nights. Cherry wood also puts a sweet, smoky flavor on food, so it is highly recommended for grills, roasts, and for smoking.

Perfect for cooking and entertaining. Our cherry wood comes from British Columbia, and we have them naturally seasoned and dried to perfection. It is a better choice compared to ordinary firewood.

Seriously, what’s the buzz with birch firewood!?!?

You might have heard your friends and family talk about Birch as if it’s your meal ticket to the glory land.

So, what’s the deal?

Birch is a premium hardwood firewood. Hardwood burns longer, hotter, cleaner, with less smoke and less ash than softwood as a counterpart.

Around Calgary and surrounding areas, birch is hard to come by. We have lots of softwood trees such as evergreens but not many hardwood trees at our disposal. Geographically, birch is not ideal for these climates. You’ll see many birch trees birch dying off as it is not a widely recommended tree to plant in AB.

This makes birch very sought after, and not many firewood providers in Calgary have large quantities of birch firewood available.

Now, you know the basics of why birch is excellent, but I will tell you a little more about what you need to know about birch and why people love to burn it.

Different types of Birch

There are two different types of birch that you will come across, Silver birch and yellow birch. Both come from the same tree species and have similar burning characteristics, but one is slightly better than the other.

Silver Birch – This type of birch is distinguished with a bright white bark and a consistent light white grain. Silver birch can primarily be found in Alberta and Saskatchewan. It burns at roughly 24.0 BTU – 25.0 BTU’s.

Yellow Birch: This type of birch is distinguished with a white/yellow bark and has a yellow hue for the inside grain. This birch is primarily found in BC with Yellow birch being slightly denser than silver birch. This makes it better quality coming in at 25.0 BTU – 27.0 BTU.

No matter which type of birch you burn, you will have a very similar burning experience and enjoy the quality of firewood with either option.

Burning Characteristics

The notable characteristics of birch are its heat, burn time, flames, aroma, coals, smoking, popping and residue.

When burning birch, it emits a very low-density smoke with no popping, which makes sitting around an outdoor fire or burning indoors effortless and enjoyable. It releases a pleasant aroma with beautiful bright flames and long hot burning coals.

Once you have burned through birch firewood, it leaves a low amount of ash and creates a very low amount of creosote build-up, making it ideal for indoor burning and spacial heating.

Firewood Math & Value

Don’t be fooled; this type of math isn’t the scary kind; it is the type of math that makes sense and gets you the most value for your money.

Why pay more for birch firewood?

Birch on average burns 2-2.5 times longer and hotter than softwoods such as spruce and pine. This means you need half the quantity of birch to release the same amount of energy or get twice or more of the amount of energy with the same amount of wood.

This makes sense because you will pay more for birch upfront but will actually be getting more value over time. In some cases, it could be cheaper over time to burn birch, and you will get all the fantastic firewood characteristics and a better experience for free.

If you have less storage space or have constraints with the amount of room you have when going on your next camping trip, then birch will get you much farther when used for firewood than cheap softwood firewood will.

This makes birch the gold standard for a premium quality firewood burning experience for indoor or outdoor burning. Whatever your firewood needs, birch will always be an amazing option that you can’t go wrong with.

Instead of having a mediocre burning experience, you can take it to the next level with birch. Enjoy effortless high quality burning every single time.
